Had a Late Night Snack Attack Lately?

Have you ever eaten something you shouldn’t have, and then felt very guilty afterwards? You know you shouldn’t have indulged … but it was so good! Like, say, key lime pie, its sweet-tart filling oh, so creamy on your tongue? Have you surrendered to just one "little" chocolate chip cookie even though you were "watching your weight"?

I was reminded of the hungry dieter’s plight last night, when my husband and I returned home late tonight. We were confronted with an ugly sight!

Right there, in the middle of the kitchen floor and spilling into the family room, was the evidence. I saw plastic bags ripped to shreds. Cracker crumbs were scattered. Only a few whole grain flax crackers, still intact, were left. Remains of blue taco chips poked up through the light beige carpet. A pantry raid by … who else? Our lovable binge-eating Rottweiler, Cadence.

Of course, the guilty party could not be found. Finally I cornered her upstairs, ears and tail drooping, cowering in our bedroom. Cadence knew what she had done. After I forced her to come downstairs and revisit the crime scene in order to receive a stern scolding, she became even more contrite. Sure, she felt guilty, but too late! The damage was done.

As I was cleaning up the mess, I reflected on the incident. Cadence knew she wasn’t supposed to get in the pantry. Otherwise she wouldn’t have displayed such guilty behavior. But I could sympathize.

She just couldn’t help herself! Someone (I won’t name names) had carelessly left the pantry door open. And the temptation of forbidden fruit is just too hard to overcome when you are hungry and you are a dog. Or, maybe a person on a diet who really loves key lime pie.
