Add Crunch Power

Chewy and crunchy foods are more satisfying than soft or liquid foods. Many crunchy foods are also low in calories due to their fiber or water content.

When you get a snack attack, reach for a crunchy food. Pack snacks in baggies to take to work or on a trip, even if it’s just to the mall.

Here are some ideas:

  • Fresh vegetables, or crudités, are the ultimate crunch food. Carrots, celery, peppers, broccoli, and cauliflower are favorites. You might want to try something different like jicama or radishes.
  • Popcorn. Just make sure it doesn’t have added fat, especially trans fat. Read labels carefully.
  • Try a crisp apple - there’s nothing better - for a nourishing snack. Fresh pears and peaches also have crunch power.
  • Nuts and seeds can be a very satisfying snack. If you are trying to limit calories, count out a measured amount. Due to its protein and fats, a few nuts can really curb your hunger. You can roast nuts with a few seasonings for a savory snack. Serve warm to bring out the flavors.
  • Make your own trail mix. Add the ingredients you prefer. Avoid highly processed junk foods. Choose from your favorite nuts and seeds, high fiber cereal, dried fruits, or even a few chocolate chips. To limit calories, measure your serving into a small bowl or baggie.
