Snack on Nuts to Lose Weight

That’s right. Snack on nuts to lose weight.

How can this be? Most diets caution you against eating nuts due to their high fat and calorie content.

However, a 2007 Spanish study published in Obesity reported that study participants who ate nuts at least 2 times per week had less weight gain after more than 2 years of follow-up. Those with little nut consumption gained more weight over the 28 month study period.

So, if you like nuts, there’s no need to cut them out of your diet. They can be a healthy snack (in moderation, of course).

Why are nuts helpful?

Nuts contain protein. Protein can boost metabolism and decrease hunger better than other nutrients.

Nuts contain healthy fats which stimulate fat burning enzymes through PPAR receptors. These good fats also stimulate CCK production in the intestines. CCK goes to the brain to turn off hunger.

Nuts are low in carbohydrates, so they have a low glycemic load. They don’t stimulate insulin production.

In a nutshell, nuts stimulate the right enzymes and hormones to boost metabolism and squash hunger. Snacking on nuts will help you keep your insulin levels down, enabling you to burn more fat.

What’s more, when you eat nuts you are less likely to eat unhealthy snack foods that contain sugar or trans fat.

So, nuts to you!

Eating them raw and unsalted is best.

The healthiest nuts to eat?

  • Almonds
  • Walnuts
  • Brazil nuts
  • Pine nuts
  • Pecans
  • Hazelnuts

Peanuts are not truly a nut, but a legume. They contain more carbohydrates than true nuts. Peanuts also carry aflatoxin, a carcinogen. Tree nuts may be a better choice.

Store your nuts in the refrigerator or freezer to prevent the healthy oils from turning rancid.
