Coenzyme Q10

Coenzyme Q10 is one of the 3 Rejuvenators. They are recommended because of their ability to protect the mitochondria, your fat-burning power plants. Research suggests that these 3 natural vitamin-like compounds may enhance metabolism and energy levels and protect us from the effects of aging and disease.*

CoQ10 is an important antioxidant produced in the body. It is also called ubiquinone (because it is ubiquitous in every cell). It acts as a key element in the electron transport system, the final common pathway of all metabolism. In fact, coQ10 is crucial to the production of ATP, the packets of energy used for every single chemical reaction in the body.

CoQ10 protects cellular structures from free radical damage, prevents atherosclerosis by decreasing oxidation of blood fats and cholesterol, and is used as a drug in the treatment of heart disease, high blood pressure, and congestive heart failure. CoQ10 is particularly helpful in preventing mitochondrial damage. Diseases that may be worsened by mitochondrial dysfunction, such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimers disease, ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), congestive heart failure, and muscular dystrophy may benefit from large supplemental doses of this vital molecule, according to some research studies. Improvements in immune function and lowering of blood pressure have been documented with coQ10 supplementation. However, most of these treatments are still considered experimental.

CoQ10 may also help protect our fat-burning mitochondria to enable us lose weight more effectively. Supplementing with coQ10 may be beneficial since individuals with obesity are often deficient. Also, studies confirm that as we get older, we make less and less of this vital nutrient. This may have something to do with our decrease in energy and increase in degenerative diseases as we age.

People with type 2 (adult onset) diabetes have been found to have much lower blood levels of CoQ10 than healthy individuals. If you take a statin cholesterol lowering drug, we highly recommend that you take a coQ10 supplement, since these drugs inhibit the body’s own production of CoQ10.

You may benefit from coenzyme Q10 supplementation if you:

  • Have trouble losing weight
  • Exercise heavily
  • Feel like you need more energy
  • Have heart disease such as coronary artery disease, a weak heart muscle, or congestive heart failure
  • Have high blood pressure
  • Have diabetes
  • Have neurological deterioration like Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s disease or want to prevent it
  • Have chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Take a statin cholesterol-lowering drug
